California Zephyr, Cape Horn, CA 7-10-01 / 3 Engines-179, 178, & 177
I caught the East bound and West bound California Zephyr near Cape Horn. This was a very critical engineering feat back in 1867 when the Trans Continental line was being built. The road bed had to be blasted out of a solid rock wall with gun powder.
The East bound train was unique in that all 3 engines were consecutive numbers. This was a big train as it had 1 headend baggage, 10 passenger and 6 material handling cars.
The West bound train was pulled by 3 engines 66, 141, and the third engine was the early paint scheme and I couldn’t read a number. It also had a headend baggage car, 9 passenger, 1 baggage and 6 material handling cars on the tail end,

Fire & Smoke - Can your Car Shoot Flames Like This..?

My friend bought this car for $60,000. The original owner brought it over to demonstrate the operation. When the afterburners were turned on the heat and shock wave was incredible. The previous owner ran 1/4 mile time’s in the low 4 seconds and over 300 miles an hour. I’m not sure what engine is in the car, but I think it was a J75. My friend wanted to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foun...

This is the original Transcontinental line that was opened in 1869 that connected California to the East. This video is on the run up the mountain as the train heads East to Donner Pass and Reno on the East side of the mountain. In the train are half dozen open 2 level Autoracks. Because of vandalism to autos they have been converted to enclosed cars.
Tehachapi Part-3, Cliff to Rowen

This is next in a series videos of the railroad crossing of the Tehachapi Mountain. Cliff to Rowen is like getting a look at the dark side of the moon. It is very hard to get there because of private property issues. Back here are Tunnels 7 & 8, from Cliff you immediately enter Tunnel 7 as you head upgrade, after leaving Tunnel 7 you run a short 1/2 mile distance before entering #8. On exiting ...

It's a shame 4449 had to stop along the race. 844 beat her to the finish line
Who win 4449 or 8444
If anyone knows the name of the dvd, I wanna watch it if possible. I remember having this exact event on that dvd of train compilations and I wanna rewatch the dvds. 🥹

no complaints here!! This is beautiful !!!
Ależ maszyna !!!
I was blessed to be among the crowd at Sullivan's Curve. Amazing!
High speed rail in its day and proving all these years later they still got it. Great to see these art deco beauties and magnificent industrial era powerhouses climbing this pass together and with ease Our grand parents traveled with class, no doubt.
My family has 3 generations of SP employees. Love these videos
Did these old excavators have interchangeable booms, meaning they could be converted between shovel, backhoe, crane and dragline?
Seeing all of that black goodness puts a smile on my face, the real coal rollers
Was the diesel engine working or was it there for braking?
There are 2 diesel’s on the UP train. They are there to act as helpers climbing the grade. They can use their dynamic breaking when going down grade. Also if the steam engine has an issue they can maneuver the train off the mainline
@@Tshasta4449 yeah I know. Was just wondering because the other steam engine was doing the deal all by itself.
@@craigroberts6527 The size of the train b makes a huge difference. 4449 has a lot smaller train. Both engines have similar tractive effort. That grade that they are climbing is over 2%,
Nice quality video! It's funny how there were so many UP locomotives in the video since it was pre merger.
Those chugging sounds bring music to my ears
OOOOHHHhhhhhh NICE PACING...GREAT JOB !!!! Your video has all of mine beat.... WOW !!!! You can almost see the reflection of the locomotive paint in the wet pavement !!! Like Eric Roberts in RUNAWAY TRAIN '''YEAHHH BLOW BABY BLOOOOOWWWWW!!!"
I grew up a couple miles from this yard on Altamont Dr. and during the winter when the air is colder, you can hear the engines and wheel sounds, my dad worked for SP so it was interesting back then.
Do you have any cab footage?
No, it’s almost impossible to get a cab ride unless you know the engineer or are part of the train crew
Yea the day light is burning diesel fuel ...now days there tree hugers would have a heart attack
Very true
I am surprised the governor News0me hasn't shut down the railroad for all the climate n0nsence...but great video of two old steam trains.🏆🏆
Fun fact: both 4449 and 844 have top speeds over 100 MPH (4449's about 110 and 844 around 120), and without 4449's booster, have almost the same tractive effort. 100 might not seem that impressive, but consider these are giant hunks of metal with little to no traction on the rails, pulling long heavy trains. These things are absolute _beasts_
The only ASMR video I'll ever enjoy.
That sound🥰
Remarkable, especially considering on the backside of the Cajon Pass was the site of a terrible train derailment during the 80’s. Such a sight to see.
This was by / for Pentrex, Steam to Los Angeles
Actually this was recorded by a news channel in LA. This was videoed leaving after the event
Cool! Stéph.
God and I know I'm gonna feel so stupid but anyone remember the name of the one engine I know the orange one is a daylight and as far as their numbers go I can't read them I haven't gone to get glasses yet
The grey engine is Union Pacific 8444, although since then the original number has been given back 844.
@@Tshasta4449 the grey one i wanted the name on
lol what's with all the 4s, don't you know what they mean?
Wish I could seen it in oerson

This is something that happens in New South Wales Australia TWICE a year in Sydney and Maitland. Why haven't our Americans cousins done it since?
The biggest problem is the Union Pacific doesn’t run other organizations equipment on their tracks. This event had 4449 running on SP track and 8444 on UP track. Since 1996 the UP took over the SP system and thats the problem.
